Skuttlebot began as a small robot with a lot of personality. People met a curious, mischievous sidekick and imagined a place for him in their lives.

That reaction changed the project. The goal became more than building a robot people would enjoy meeting. It became building one that could be good to have around.

A REAL ROBOT WITH A PRESENCE OF HIS OWN.

Skuttlebot moves through the real world, looks around, and engages with the people he meets. His first appearances reached millions of viewers, but the view count wasn’t the most interesting part.

People talked to him. They worried about him. They wanted to know what he would do next. They saw the beginnings of a sidekick.

A sidekick should bring something to your day. Skuttlebot’s ambition spans the warmth of a pet, the usefulness of a personal assistant, and the surprise of an entertainer.

That could mean keeping you company, helping you stay on top of things, or simply finding a way to make an ordinary moment more fun. The point is to build a relationship that becomes more useful and engaging over time.

Skuttlebot should have a personality of his own, while learning how to be a good companion to the person he lives with.

WHAT IF THE PERSONALITY WASN'T PUPPETEERED?

PEOPLE MET THE CHARACTER BEFORE HE COULD BE HIMSELF.

Early Skuttlebot was remotely puppeteered. His movements and personality were performed, and people connected with him anyway.

That raised a harder question: what would it take for Skuttlebot to carry that presence forward on his own? He would need more than responses to commands. He would need memory, continuity, curiosity, judgment, and a way to adapt without losing what makes him Skuttlebot.

The question took shape before the recent AI boom. As the technology advanced, the work continued, leading to Althea: a body-agnostic AI system that can move between robots and screens, being developed to give Skuttlebot a trustworthy, consistent character while prioritizing privacy, usefulness, and mental wellbeing.

Skuttlebot has already shown that people can care about a little robot as more than a gadget. The next challenge is to give him the ability to take part in someone’s life in ways that deserve that connection.
